MeFi Music

I'm a big fan of Metafilter's Music section (or as I like to call it, MeMu), and I figure I'd point out some of my favorite songs that have been posted there recently. There's some real talent brewing in the community, and they deserve to be heard.

We'll Drive This Car by OverlappingElvis [MeMu] - The instrumentation on this is gorgeous, and it's very thoughtfully written.

Tracatacata tun tun by micayetoca [MeMu] - Micayetoca is one of my favorites, he always manages to include some new sound from some crazy instrument in every song.

Tsunami by jlowen [MeMu] - This is just a fun little song. You can't lose when you combine lots of instruments with lots of booze.

That's all for now. I will let you know if anything else catches my ear.

I guess Tony Field doesn't own a copy of Slaughterhouse-5 (or a flatbed scanner)

I received the following comment on flickr today: Vonnegut's headstone

Congratulations. Your image has been published by NPR's "On the Media."

Here's
the link

It’s a perfect illustration for our story. Thanks for sharing!

-Tony Field, NPR's "On
the Media"[tfield at wnyc.org]

You're welcome, Tony Field, although I'm not sure if scanning one of Kurt's Vonnegut's drawings from my copy of Slaughterhouse-5 really makes it my image. But really, I'm glad I could help out. This must be what it feels like to be an unpaid intern.

I haven't listened to it yet, but the transcript from the piece is good stuff. Of course, anything to do with Vonnegut is good.

"I say in speeches," Vonnegut said, "that a plausible mission of artists is to make people appreciate being alive, at least a little bit."

I miss that guy.

  • Whiffle Hurling and the design of new games/sports in the physical world
"The video-game industry is bristling with innovation: You've got haptic controllers on the Wii, titles like Eye of Judgment merging card-games with computers, and the increasingly strange economic activity in online worlds. Our culture is clearly hungry for new forms of play.

Yet how many new major physical sports have you played in recent years? Zero, I'll bet. The pantheon of major team-sports -- football, basketball, baseball, soccer, hockey -- hasn't significantly altered in decades."

  • New York's Mayor Bloomberg proposes congestion pricing to reduce traffic and save the Earth
"The basic idea behind congestion pricing is simple: make motorists pay to use the busiest streets. Under the Mayor’s proposal, an invisible line would be drawn around Manhattan from Eighty-sixth Street south to the Battery. Vehicles crossing this line on weekdays between 6 A.M. and 6 P.M. would be charged a fee—eight dollars for cars, twenty-one dollars for trucks."

Happy Summer Reading Suggestion from Borders: Chuck Palahniuk

Summer Reading: Chuck PalahniukI was at Borders yesterday to pick up the new Modest Mouse album and Nick Cave's GRINDERMAN. While I was there, I took a stroll through the books and noticed that they had a little display of Chuck Palahniuk books set up, suggesting (in festive blue and yellow with a happy sunflower next to his name) that he would make for delightful summer reading. In case you aren't familiar with Chuck, he wrote Fight Club. You might have seen the movie in which Brad Pitt and Edward Norton beat the snot out of each other, recruit an army of terrorists, and eventually start blowing up buildings. People are known to vomit and faint at his book readings. Here is a summary of his latest book, Rant, pulled from its Amazon page:
Buster Casey, destined to live fast, die young and murder as many people as he can, is the rotten seed at the core of Palahniuk's comically nasty eighth novel (after Haunted; Lullaby; Diary; etc.). Set in a future where urbanites are segregated by strict curfews into Daytimers and Nighttimers, the narrative unfolds as an oral history comprising contradictory accounts from people who knew Buster. These include childhood friends horrified by the boy's macabre behavior (getting snakes, scorpions and spiders to bite him and induce instant erections; repeatedly infecting himself with rabies), policemen and doctors who had dealings with the rabies "superspreader"; and Party Crashers, thrill-seeking Nighttimers who turn city streets into demolition derby arenas. After liberally infecting his hometown peers with rabies, Buster hits the big city and takes up with the Party Crashers. A series of deaths lead to a police investigation of Buster (long-since known as "Rant"—the sound children make while vomiting) that peaks just as Buster apparently commits suicide in a blaze of car-crash glory. This dark religious parable (there's even a resurrection) from the master of grotesque excess may not attract new readers, but it will delight old ones.
Now, don't get me wrong, I like Chuck (I've read nearly all of his books), and he really would make great summer reading for some folks. I just think that maybe they are trying to reach the wrong audience with the sunflower. May I suggest trying to find some clip-art of a guy getting his intestines pulled inside-out in a hot tub? That would probably be a bit more fitting.

Cinco de Mayo

Happy Cinco de Mayo! It is also free comic book day, I am told, which means if you go to your local comic book store they give you free stuff. And, of course, today is the day i=bored has been resurrected. But what else have I been doing, you ask?

Well, Twitter is fun. My photo everyday project (Ennui07) was completely ruined by a month of mono, but it could yet be revived. Dave Makes Music dot com, of course, is my baby. I am working slowly on tweaking and expanding it, besides being my musical portfolio, it's also kind of my webdesign sandbox. But I am bothered by 2Nmusic... what should I do with it? It seems like a shame to let it just sit there. I'm not sure what its purpose should be, though.

I have started a new blog with something resembling a purpose. Let me try to explain it:

Am I lazy? Am I busy? Or am I just utilizing my time the wrong way? Doubly So is my new blog that will document my exploration of just what exactly I can do with these 24 hour days that we've all been stuck with. There will be graphs.

Finally, my sister and I are talking about starting an art and design company. We're working on a name. I'll keep you posted.

That is all for now.
